I love a free book! When I was offered a free copy of Enchantress, Book 1 in James Maxwell’s Evermen Series, I jumped at the chance. Eighteen months later, I finally read it! From an author's perspective, the downside of free books is that readers aren't always in a hurry to read something they didn't pay for.

Enchantress tells the story of brother and sister, Miro and Ella. Miro hopes to be a swordsman in the Duke’s army and his sister an enchantress. They realise their dreams during treacherous times: someone is stealing the Houses’ lexicons—the means by which they practise their unique lore—and fomenting war. Miro has a tougher time of things while Ella breezes through Enchantress training. As a reader, I find characters who work hard to gain their skills more interesting compared to those who have talent plonked in their lap.

The 600-page Enchantress is a page-turner. It wasn’t the book's protagonists who enthralled me, however. What kept me reading was Maxwell’s world, his rune-based magic system and the technologies they powered. The battle scenes were realistic without being gratuitous, and the plot never dragged. There’s a nice plot twist two-thirds of the way into the story.

The next time you see the eBook available for free, grab it. Just don’t wait 18 months to read it!
