Like any craft, writing requires an investment of time. Over and over, the advice is to write every day and read, read a lot.
Being an indie author also requires money to pay for editors, book cover designers, web hosting, email marketing, a service for helping readers sideload your ebook onto their e-reader, a service for managing smart links, training courses… the list goes on.

Profit and Loss

Profit and Loss

Don’t get me wrong, self-publishing can be done on a shoestring. As I see it, however, being an indie author is all about being a business owner, and for a business to succeed, investments must be made.

For now, there’s more money going out than coming in. Everyone in this business will tell you that indie publishing is a marathon not a sprint—Ginny even bought me tortoise keyring as a reminder! It's going to take a while before I see a return on my investment. In the meantime, I've got to keep my nerve.
