Songs of Insurrection is my kind of fantasy. Its setting is Hau (China) and is filled with the mythology and culture of this region, well-rounded characters and great storytelling.

Songs of Insurrection

Songs of Insurrection

The main characters include Kaiya, a young, naïve, clumsy princess of Hau with the nascent ability to control others through music. Her love interest, Prince Hardeep of Ankira, is a musician and a trained paladin. Ankira needs Hau’s help. After her father, the Emperor, refuses, Hardeep looks to Kaiya for assistance.

My favourite characters are Tian (the former and banished childhood friend of Kaiya, who knows the precise number of days since he last saw her) and Jie (a half-elf whose body ages at a slower rate than humans’). Both are members of the secret Black Lotus Clan—an organisation of imperial spies. And that’s right, you read elf. The book also contains orcs, dragons and dwarves! The author does a great job of integrating them into the story without jarring the world building.

The final main character is Kai Long. He is friend to both Hardeep and Kaiya and looks out for them both.

Songs of Insurrection contains unrequited love, murder, court intrigue, simmering rebellion and humour. It’s a wonderful read and contains a brilliant plot twist, which is reason alone to read the next book in the series.
